Possibly pregnant and have some questions

I have been watching my periods for the last three months and have had a normal 28 day cycle. I was suppose to start Feb 1st 2011 and am now a week late. I have taken a pregnancy test and negative. I have been having light cramps and lower back aches as well as sore breast. I do realize that this could be a sign of my visitor coming as well. I have several questions. I was wondering if even though I have a 28 day cycle does that always mean I ovulate at exactly 14 days? Am I testing too soon to get an accurate answer? I am also concerned due to the fact that last year i did have an ectopic pregnancy and I know the hcg levels do fluctuate when that happens. If I am pregnant and was having another ectopic pregnancy would i still test positive? Thanks so much for your help. Shan

    Shan,
It looks like you are a week late and your test is negative, but you are experiencing some symptoms. Given your history with an eptopic pregnancy, I would call my obgyn immediately and ask her to see you. Eptopic pregnancies are dangerous, and I've heard that if you've had one before, it is more likely to happen again. Just get seen to be safe if you can. Keep us posted, wishing you the best- Lorraine

Good question, Shan. If you were having an ectopic pregnancy, your body would still produce the Hcg hormone, thus making an HPT positive. However, pregnancy tests can sometimes be incorrect. The test may not be sensitive enough for the amount of hcg your body is making, it could be a defective test, or many other variables. Your best bet would be to call your doctor's office and get a pregnancy test from them. You may want to ask them for a quantitative blood test instead of a qualitative test. Quantitative tests measure the amount of hcg hormone your body is carrying, while the qualitative test is just a yes/no type of test (similar to the home pregnancy tests). Good luck to you and hope that if you're pregnant, that it isn't an ectopic pregnancy.

I agree with Irving. Usually, hcg production will also be stimulated by an ectopic pregnancy and a pregnancy test could come out negative. However, these tests are not necessarily as senstive and accurate as a blood test. Call your doctor and explain your symptoms and ask for a blood test.

The symptoms you describe are typical of those experienced in early pergnancy, but could also occur due to a later or heavier than usual menstrual period and might also be psychosomatic or associated with an ovarian cyst. Definitely check with your doctor.

Good luck, I hope everything will go well!
